Attacks[]

MHFU[]

Strafe Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga leaps to the left or right while facing the hunter, to gain a better position for follow-up attacks. This attack is quite often followed on by a Wing Slash, or, very rarely, a Taunt.
This attack does not deal damage, but it puts Nargacuga in a better position to damage the hunter for future attacks.

Rage Mode
Nargacuga will rattle its tail 3 times and will produce more spikes than normal.
Evasive Maneuver

As this attack deals no damage, there is no evasive maneuver necessary. However, it is recommended to be cautious, and keep an eye on Nargacuga when it performs this attack, as it may immediately follow on with another attack, usually a Wing Slash

Wing Slash Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga leaps at the hunter once, slashing at them with its cutting wing.
This attack is fast, and can follow on from many other attacks, such as the Strafe.
Generally performed when Nargacuga is a medium distance from the hunter, but may be performed at close quarters on occasion.
This attack may be directly followed on by another, such as a Tail Sweep or a 360 Degree Tail Swipe (MHP3rd only).

Rage Mode
Nargacuga does this 2 times, followed by Strafe
Evasive Maneuver

Rolling in the opposite direction to this attack (i.e. if Nargacuga is attacking with its left wing, roll to its right) is advised, as it should mean that the attack misses the hunter. Rolling "into" the attack can also be effective, but is more difficult to succeed in, and as a result, is not highly recommended.
This attack can be blocked, so this is a viable option for those using a weapon capable of doing so.

Prowler Stance Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga assumes a crouching position, with one arm in front of the other, then pauses for a few seconds. This attack is not dangerous in itself, but it will be directly followed on by a Short or Long Narga Combo.

Rage Mode
If you throw a Sonic Bomb at it in rage mode, it'll flinch and drop a shiny.
Evasive Maneuver

Try to get behind Nargacuga if at all possible, as this will mean that it is more difficult for the follow-up combo to make contact.
Throwing a Sonic Bomb at Nargacuga while it is in its Prowler Stance will cause it to flinch and lose concentration, but will also have the negative effect of instantly enraging Nargacuga.

Short Narga Combo Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

The shorter of the two Narga Combos. Nargacuga leaps towards the hunter, swiping at them with the opposite cutting wing to the one that was leading when it was in the Prowler Stance. It then immediately leaps and swipes with the other wing.
This attack is fast, and can easily catch hunters off-guard.
Nargacuga can change direction between the first and second swipes, but not by a lot.

Rage Mode
Performed less often than the Long Narga Combo
Evasive Maneuver

Try to get behind Nargacuga if at all possible, as Nargacuga cannot change its direction by very much during this attack. If this is impossible, rolling in the opposite direction to the first swipe, then rolling in the same direction as Nargacuga performs the second swipe may also prove effective.
This attack can be blocked, but drains a large amount of stamina if it hits both times.

Long Narga Combo Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Similar to the Short Narga combo, but this time Nargacuga leaps and swipes at the hunter a third time.
This attack covers significant range, so the hunter is not guaranteed to be safe at practically any distance.
After performing this attack, Nargacuga rears its head back, letting out a small roar (not requiring Earplugs) as it does so.

Rage Mode
Performed more often than the Short Narga Combo. This also gains a fourth attack when Nargacuga is Rage Mode: After the third leap and swipe, Nargacuga spins 180 degrees, then leaps high into the air, and pounces on the hunter.
Evasive Maneuver

Try to get behind Nargacuga if at all possible, and the attacks should not be able to make contact. If this is not possible, rolling three-four times in the opposite direction to the first attack may also prove effective. Panic Diving is also a useful alternative (if weapon is sheathed), as the period of invulnerability given by this can help greatly. For the last attack (only when Nargacuga is enraged), roll 1-2 times to either side, and the attack should miss the hunter.
As with the Short Narga Combo, blocking is possible, but drains very high amounts of stamina, particularly when Nargacuga is in Rage Mode.
The time it takes for Nargacuga to rear its head back and roar after this attack can be used to deal some damage.
Keep an eye on which foot Nargacuga has forward, as that determines which direction it deviates towards on the first jump. If the left foot is forward, then it will deviate to the left, and flip-flop from there. The same goes for the Short Narga Combo above.

Tail Sweep Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga "winds" its body up, hops slightly, then sweeps at the hunter with its tail. The tail moves so fast it creates a white wind around it. This attack is fast, and covers quite a large area, so it is recommended for hunters to be cautious with this attack.
This attack is almost always performed after a Charge, and can be followed up by another attack, such as a Wing Slash or a Jump Back.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning
Evasive Maneuver

Roll to the opposite direction to this attack, and the tail should not make contact with the hunter. If to Nargacuga's side, rolling towards the body may prove successful, as the base of the tail is higher above the ground than the tip, and hence will likely pass over the hunter's head.
Also, as this attack is very fast, there is only a small time-frame in which this attack is making contact with the hunter. As a result, rolling into the tail with good timing (just as the tail would be about to hit the hunter) can allow the hunter to roll through the attack unharmed.
This attack can be blocked, making this a viable alternative for those using a weapon capable of doing so.

Spikeshot Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga raises its tail above its head, then flings tail spikes at the hunter, which travel for a varying distance (generally the distance the hunter is from Nargacuga when it begins this attack).
This attack can immediately follow a Jump Back, making it difficult to avoid for an inexperienced hunter. It can also follow up with another attack with very little pause in between.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning
Evasive Maneuver

Rolling to either side several times should prove effective, as the spikes should not hit the hunter if they are too far to the side. Rolling away from the spikes' path may also work, although this is riskier, and in no way advised.
Blocking is also effective, so hunters using a weapon capable of doing so should bear this in mind.
As Nargacuga may follow on this attack with another, with very little pause, it is not advised to attempt to attack during this period.

Jump Back Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga jumps away from the hunter, readying itself for the follow-up move.
This is not really an attack in itself, but Nargacuga will usually follow this on with another attack, such as a Spikeshot, a Wing Slash or, rarely, a Tail Slam.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning
Evasive Maneuver

As this attack deals no damage, there is essentially no evasive maneuvers. It is advised, however, to proceed with caution, as Nargacuga will probably follow on with another attack, with very little notice.

Windup Spikeshot Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Similar to the regular Spikeshot, differing in that Nargacuga will rattle its tail in a small circle two times before releasing the Tail Spikes. This attack is also more powerful than the regular Spikeshot, and covers a wider range. The middle spike travels considerably further that the others. The majority of the tail spikes land at the distance away from Nargacuga the hunter was as the attack began
This attack is generally performed when Nargacuga is a long way away from the hunter, but may be performed at close range occasionally.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning.
Evasive Maneuver

Similar to that of the regular Spikeshot, except the hunter will need to be a further distance to the side in order to avoid the Tail Spikes
This attack can be blocked, but still damages the hunter if not using Guard skills.
Nargacuga will generally pause for longer than it does after performing the regular Spikeshot after this attack has been executed. This gives the hunter an opportunity to deal some damage to Nargacuga.

Roar Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga plants both its front legs on the ground, then lowers its head slightly, letting out a loud roar. This roar does not damage the hunter, but causes them to cover their ears if not using the Earplugs skill.
This attack is used when the hunter first encounters Nargacuga, and when Nargacuga is going into Rage Mode.

Rage Mode
Used whenever Nargacuga goes into Rage Mode.
Evasive Maneuver

This attack does not cause damage, so it is not absolutely necessary to avoid. It can still be advantageous to do so however, as it allows the hunter to attack Nargacuga while it is roaring. The roar can be rendered ineffective with the Earplugs skill, as well as being able to be blocked.
If using Earplugs/Blocking weapon, use this time to inflict some damage on Nargacuga.

Taunt Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga stands still and growls at the hunter, slowly slapping the ground twice with its tail. The tail can slightly damage the hunter, but this is more of an inconvenience than a threat.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning
Evasive Maneuver

As this attack deals no damage, and causes Nargacuga to remain stationary for several seconds, the player can use this opportunity to deal some heavy damage to Nargacuga. Attacking Nargacuga's head during this time is a good option, as Nargacuga's head takes the highest proportion of damage.

Pseudowyvern Bite Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga bites at the hunter twice, moving forwards with each bite, in a similar manner to Tigrex. The bites alternate in which way they are directed.
This attack is generally used when the hunter is standing directly in front of Nargacuga, and may also follow on from a Charge.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning
Evasive Maneuver

Rolling to either side once or twice should cause this attack to miss the hunter.
This attack is also possible to block, making this a viable alternative for those using a weapon capable of doing so. However, as this attack hits twice, it can drain a significant amount of stamina.
There will only be a brief period in which the Nargacuga is vulnerable after executing this attack, so the hunter will only be able to get 2-3 hits in at most (obviously depending on weapon type).

Charge Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga runs towards the hunter, with its body low to the ground. This attack causes only a small amount of damage if it hits, but is almost always followed on by a Tail Swipe.
This attack is generally used to close the distance between Nargacuga and the hunter, and hence is usually used at moderate-long range.

Rage Mode
None worth mentioning
Evasive Maneuver

Roll to Nargacuga's right, as this is the safest option due to the fact that the follow-up Tail Swipe is almost always performed to Nargacuga's left.
This attack can be blocked, but if this move and the likely following Tail Swipe hit, it will drain a large portion of the stamina bar.
If the attack is successfully avoided, and the hunter is on Nargacuga's right-hand side, it is most likely safe to attack Nargacuga, as the Tail Swipe should not hit.

Tail Slam Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga's signature move. Nargacuga growls while facing the hunter, then leaps into the air, spinning 180 degrees, before slamming down hard on the ground with its tail. This attack will cause Nargacuga to become stuck in the ground for a few seconds afterwards, as it tries to pry its tail free. A cloud of dust rises from near where the tail lands, which can also damage the hunter if hit
At higher ranks, this attack can be an instant-kill if hit.

Rage Mode
Performed far more often.
Evasive Maneuver

When Nargacuga first begins to growl, roll to either side. Roll again as the attack is about to hit, and the attack should miss the hunter. This attack cannot be rolled through, even with the use of the armour skill Evade +2.
If blocked, the hunter will still take significantly high damage (even with Guard skills), so should only be done if there is no other option available.
If this attack is successfully avoided, the time it takes Nargacuga to free itself from the gound can be used to inflict some heavy damage.

MHP3rd[]

  • This section only covers moves exclusive to MHP3rd.
360 Tail Swipe Ailment Inflicted: None
Normal Mode

Nargacuga raises its head, growls/roars, then spins 360 degrees at high velocity, sweeping the area around it with its tail. This attack is extremely fast, and has moderately high range, so can easily catch an unsuspecting hunter off-guard.
Nargucuga always raises its head and lets out a soft roar after executing this attack.

Rage Mode
Performed more often.
Evasive Maneuver

As this attack is extremely fast, and has a relatively small hit-box, it is relatively easy to roll through this attack, even without the aid of Evade skills. Simply roll into the Tail Swipe the instant it would have made contact, and, if timed correctly, the hunter should roll through the attack unharmed. This does require some practise though, so it is not advised for the inexperienced.
Otherwise, rolling away from Nargacuga is probably the safest option, although the range of this attack means that the tail may still hit the hunter. Rolling towards Nargacuga sometimes works, as the base of the tail is higher above the ground than the tip, meaning the hunter can pass under unharmed.
Blocking is also an option for those using a weapon capable of doing so.
As Nargacuga always delays after performing this attack, this time can be used to inflict some damage on Nargacuga.
